Actually the Patriarch saw the minutes from the meeting which says that Salmas (bishop Athenagoras) was removed as regional Vicar general from Ontario/Western Canada and removed as office manager of the Archdiocese. Sotirios stripped him too just not in the same publicly humiliating amazing way as Iakovos where he kicked him out of Quebec and told him his only option is to move to Toronto. And nothing has happened to Sotirios and nothing will happen. Patriarch is still gonna let him stay until his 50th jubilee in December.
Sure Salmas knows Elpidophoros but not enough for him to start a war with Sotirios and intervene with the Patriarch.
And let’s face it, Salmas is a nice guy but pretty lazy which is why there has been no offer for him to go to America from Elpidophoros or any of the Metropolitans.
Sotirios know Salmas called Metropolitan Emmanuel to complain to him about him after he got the letter of removal from his responsibilities. But he didn’t call the Patriarch because he doesn’t even have his cell number. Nor did Salmas get a call from the Patriarch when Emmanuel informed him. If you don’t have a direct line to the Patriarch, you’re not really important.
Salmas messed up. He was so focused on what Iakovos was doing and how it wasn’t fair that he got to do this and that and was complaining all the time to Sotirios. I’ve never heard someone complain to their boss that much about a colleague. He took his eye off the ball. And now has zero chance of taking over Canada just like Iakovos. Not the smartest guys. And not with the influence you may think they have.
A known pedophile doesn’t last 50 years and even gets elevated to Archbishop if they’re not smarter than the rest. While the Patriarch was kicking out Archbishop Demetrios from America Sotirios was maneuvering to become Archbishop of Canada even though Sotirios should have been removed too. We might all hate the guy but no one can deny he wields far more power than most other hierarchs around the world.
Sotirios is brilliant he needs Salmas to run that joke of an institution called the Patriarchal Theological Academy.
